The art work in this book is wonderful! I just read this book to a group of 2nd graders and it was a great book that generated a lot of participation from the students. Cute story! I would love to find more books illustrated by Shannon Kinnell, what a talented man! I plan on purchasing this book for my brother-in-law's dental office.

Bruce Lee: The Celebrated Life of the Golden Dragon

a must
Bruce Lee was his own man.he had so much style&smoothness about him.this book highlights his world in front of the public&behind it.very detailed&very upfront.you get a very insightful look into his world&vision.a man who forever changed the world with his talent&craft.a man who was trying to make sense of his surroudings&the things that were in placed around him.He will never be forgotten.

Like looking through a family photo album
What an intimate look at the man behind the image! The book is highly visual--the text is very limited--but the photos are like none that I've ever seen in other books on Lee. I'm talking about the baby pictures of Bruce and Brandon, photos of Lee from behind the scenes in his movies (a kind of spooky one of him and Sharon Tate from what must have been just before she was killed), and pictures of he and his wife just sitting on the couch at home. It makes you realize that there's a man and father behind the superhero that appears in his films. I loved it.

Claude E. Shannon : Collected Papers
Published in Hardcover by Wiley-IEEE Press (January, 1993)
Authors: Claude Elwood Shannon, A. D. Wyner, and Neil J. A. Sloane
Average review score:

Absolute must have for academic-types.
The IEEE Information Society releases (IEEE Press) releases yet another priceless book which is both historical in nature; yet every bit as current as when Shannon first started published some of his more famous works in the 1940's. This book is unquestionably a "must have" reference book for either communication engineers or mathemeticians who have either a serious, or newly found interest in the topic of "information theory." Shannon's theorems of Channel Capacity and Channel

Coding are studied by EE students worldwide. However, this book is much-much-more. The books 924 pages contain a wide assortment of articles written by this rare genius. Elementary cryptography and analysis of the Entropy of the written language; "communications secrecy" (which is quite honestly outdated by todays standards; but taken into context, the papers were valuable at the time.) Also obscure articles on "game theory" as it applies to the field of "artificial

intelligence" which at the time, he was a pioneer (along with other great minds including Turing, Minsky, etc..) Also, his articles on early computers and automata, and optimizing circuits so as to use less relays, etc.. are also quite interesting... Yes, the man was mortal, and to show that he wasn't all mathemetician, Shannon writes a fascinating article on the physics of JUGGLING.. The book comes with an introductory chapter which contains a somewhat adequate biography, and an interview with OMNI Magazine which was published in 1987.

This is definately a book which should be on the shelf of anyone serious about the subject. Yes, there are much more technical books on the subject. If you have a PhD in EE or mathematics, you might not be impressed... but Shannon's "easy writing style" which differs from some of the "dry" IEEE writings of today makes for an interesting read; if only for remembering history. -S.A. Hoffman, NY-

It's a great book if you need to know what's driving todays information technology w.r.t. bandwidth and how it can revolutionize the economy.

Climbing Kansas Mountains

Authors: Thomas Allen and George Shannon
Average review score:

There IS No Place Like Home
A father and his son discover that Kansas does have mountains, and many other wonderful things, as they spend a Sunday afternoon bonding on the plains of Kansas. The charming story by George Shannon is beautifully illustrated by Thomas B. Allen. Gorgeous pastels of the wheat fields, grain elevators and sleepy main streets will be quickly recognizable to anyone from the midwest. The twist is - the words and illustrations will make you see your surroundings in a new way, just like the little boy in the book!

Mountains in Kansas?
Hey--Kansas isn't flat-there are many hills, and this book is an awesome read---and sooooooo funny. You don't have to be from Kansas to enjoy the midwest humor---everyone from Kansas doesn't not have a dog named Toto! You will also find little tidbits of history.

The Concrete River
Published in Paperback by Berkley Pub Group (February, 1998)
Author: John Shannon
Average review score:

Brilliant!
There are writers in various genres (mystery, romance, westerns, etc.) and then there are Writers; they're the gifted people whose genre is scarcely relevant because their work always rises above the territory upon which they've staked their claim. John Shannon is a Writer.

This first of Shannon's Jack Liffey series is a work of lean, effective prose, spiced with startling dashes of outrageous humor (as was The Orange Curtain, my introduction to Shannon's work). Los Angeles, as portrayed through Liffey's eyes, is a series on ongoing atrocities and carnage that are so everyday as to be normal. Add to this mix a character with a tired, yet invincible, spirit who observes and accepts (but doesn't like) what he sees, and you have a hero unlike any other.

Liffy is the essential American of a certain age, (and a Viet Nam vet) possessed of heart and conscience, trying very hard to be honorable while he searches for missing children (in itself a profound metaphor for the lost innocence not only of the city, but of our entire society.)

It is a sad fact that talent is not its own reward; it does not guarantee success. But if anyone writing today deserves recognition on a large scale, it is John Shannon. His work is both insightful social commentary and an unflinching, wrenching look at the human heart. If you want to be entertained and informed, get this book! Go to out-of-print booksites if you must, or search your local library, but this is a writer who very much deserves to be widely read.

A great read:
Captures Los Angeles perfectly. Protagonist is believable, story is absorbing - I couldn't wait for the second of this series and bought it immediately when it came out (this is the first). Looking forward to the author's next book. If you like Michael Connelly, Abigail Padgett, and find Andrew Vacchs compelling (if not always palatable), give this author a try. You won't be disappointed.

Death by Deception: Unmasking Heart Failure
Published in Paperback by R F Quinn Pub Co (July, 1996)
Authors: Dick Quinn, Shannon Quinn, Colin Quinn, and Al Watson
Average review score:

An excellent followup to "Left for Dead"! A must-read!
I completely concur with clangley's review of this book. Death by Deception is the followup book to Dick Quinn's earlier book Left for Dead. In this book, Dick's daughter explains how congestive heart failure is most frequently there waiting for the person who survives a heart attack. She elaborates how cayenne saved her father's life, but how her father relied on it too exclusively to keep him alive and subsequently didn't make the lifestyle changes necessary for him to avoid eventual heart failure. She then goes into excellent detail describing how heart failure develops and what exactly it is. She describes all of the conventional treatments for heart failure and elaborates on the strengths and ultimate weaknesses of these conventional treatments. She then describes a regimen of using natural herbs--including of course cayenne--that help keep both heart attack and congestive heart failure at bay.

I've recommended this book to I don't know how many people. I consider this book a must-read for any male over the age of 35, and a must-read for any female who's approaching menopause, the time heart disease creeps up on many unsuspecting women.

If you don't ever plan on living this long, forget this book! Otherwise, whip out your credit card and order it already!!

A valuable book on congestive heart failure (CHF)
I knew Dick Quinn well. I knew him very well. He was a good friend.

I saw Dick struggle with CHF -- the ultimate outcome of heart disease -- and I saw him recover using an exotic African herb that lengthened his life and made his struggle with this terrible life-threatening illness far less painful. For most, a diagnosis of CHF is a death sentence, but this book gives hope.

This book is the only one of its kind that shows victims of CHF how to get a life sentence instead of a death sentence.

Dick's highly successful lifelong struggle with heart disease and its ultimate outcome - CHF - is an inspiration to anyone struggling with this terrible life-threatening disease. Dick extended his life for many precious days (years actually) using a variety of herbs that modern medicine is reluctant to embrace. Some of these herbs had instant and immediate impact on his vitality. I know because I saw it.

If you have, or know of someone with CHF, this book can help significantly lessen the suffering, and increase lifespans.

Flight of the Imagination
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (March, 1999)
Author: Shannon Robert Lowry
Average review score:

Captivating and A Breath of Fresh Reading
I just wanted to say that this book of poetry is one of the best to come out in years. Flight of The Imagination was very mesmerizing, and you can read each one several times and still find new things and think of spectacular places and wintry like thoughts. I hope we see more from this new author. You will really enjoy it!

Flight of The Imagination made my imagination wake up.
This book of poetry is certainly worth a read! I was really taken back with the different scapes of emotion and places that are felt throughout the book and its themes. Good lyrics and wording make this an intresting and fresh read. I think this new author has done a great job and will continue to grow. Can't wait for the next book. Flight of The Imagination would also make for a good cd. I think anyway.
